What is the UTR Number in India? | Its uses & importance

A UTR or Unique Transaction Reference number is a reference number for identifying a particular transaction in NEFT, IMPS or RTGS. It is a unique number generated by the bank that facilitates the transfer to recognize each fund transfer. UTR contains 22 characters for RTGS (Real Time Gross Settlement) and 16 characters for NEFT (National Electronic Funds Transfer).

NEFT transactions are processed in batches, therefore the fund transfer is not immediate. It operates in half-hourly batches from 8 am to 7 pm on weekdays and working Saturdays.

RTGS transfers the fund immediately. The fund is deposited within 2 hours in the beneficiary account.

The UTR number format for RTGS transactions: “XXXXRCYYYYMMDD########”

  • XXXX is the IFSC code i.e. the bank code of a sender,
  • R indicates RTGS system
